Is Don Draper a dick?

Mad Men

Been hooked up on Mad Men for a while. Don Draper, a man with a plan, the character I fell for the very moment I saw him. Little that I knew how dark he rally was. Boy is he an epitome of an anti-hero, I told myself. After the fancy glazing was licked off, you could really tell how rotten and hopeless he was inside. But that was my ego talking, and so I kept watching. Foolish I was indeed, Don, he’s a sane man. Whatever obstacles were thrown at him, he kept his cool, he never panicked, and the most peculiar thing of them all is his shocking indifference most of the time. The ever so calm look on his face, as though the world will end tomorrow and he’s the only man who knows. Wish I would also be let in on the secret. Surely then I too would have the balls to drink all kinds of brown liquids, blowing smoke through my nose, screwing whatever walks by, and kicking distasteful clients out of my office, so that my creative genius could stay uncompromised by the conservative philistines.

When a giant falls

distractions

He falls hard on the ground and the impact is sensed throughout the whole land. What does starts to rise are the questions, who was that fallen giant, and should we care about it is the biggest question. I relate myself to those who never saw anything inventive about the Apple corporation. Nothing original ever came out of that company. I’ve never used their products, as I never had the funds for it, but also never had to, as I’ve always was able to find an affordable alternative.

They say the man behind the i-products was a visionary, and now that I think about it, I guess he was. I guess he gave us the support and guidance(and the opportunity of course) to use the back then seemingly awkward products, which we undoubtedly ended up using in the near future. But look at us now, that near future is here, the man triggered a wormhole and sent us forth in time away from our prejudices and disbeliefs.

I sympathize with him, we share a few things in common, we both think that programming is small time and we believe in what we see. Alas, I’m yet to become as successful as he was. Anyways, Steve is no more, but others will come and the cycle will continue. Rest in Peace Stevo.

Help me, buy a self-help book

distractions

Baaaaa! Baaaaa! Baaaaa! Sounds familiar? Bet it’s not. That’s how we sound to the philistines, the masters of dark wizardry, sitting all day in their black towers plotting and scheming. At least, that’s what they like to think.

Don’t go on reading one of those self-help books but read this, or better yet go read a real book… Still here? Here’s what you can do, study as many self-help books as you can, write you own book, but wittier, jazz it up a bit. Become a bestseller, it shouldn’t be too complicated, it’s not a novel after all. For this you will be requiring a fan-base, start seminars, there’s always enough people with low esteem around, go nuts!
With the money you’ll earn from your humble flock, you can do then whatever you want! You can travel around the whole world first class! Live your own life, and not follow someone else’s. That’s where the power of happy comes from! Or is it? The truth is at the bottom, so you will have to dive deep. Chances are that you’re just lazy as I am. Wait! Words appear in front of me, made out of pure diamond, the glow is hypnotizing, I feel relaxed and sleepy… my eyelids are half shut, it says “Get over yourself and get in motion”.

Intelligent design, evolution, whatever

evolution

A husky spider crawled out  from beneath of my bed, only to find his little ol’ body trapped inside a mysterious glass dome. The creature was on his way to the ceiling, and now is stranded in the middle of a great-white desert of a wall, without any idea how to get out. Millions of years from now another spider is mastering his senses and instincts that eventually will whisper to his descendant, that it would be a good idea to just… play dead. So the tiny creature with his feet in the air, begins to fool his unperceivable aggressor with a skill of a master, truly, he could of fooled me.

What can I say, call me intolerant but I don’t like spiders stalking my walls. This episode was memorable though, as I’ve never observed how a spider reacts upon being trapped. What he felt? Apathy or hope? Probably nothing. No, I’m not a nature lover, at least I didn’t had a chance to get closer to it, dwelling in the city and all, although as the rest of us I can’t help but to feel fascinated by it.

I took the spider to the backyard and gently put him onto a table, in an instant the creature got resurrected, and after carefully scanning his surroundings he was on his way.

So I got this idea, if God truly exists and is omnipotent, would he be not simply fascinated by us, rather than occupied with avenging the good and punishing the bad? I think not. I believe if there really is something to life, it is the thrill of not knowing what would come next, no matter what might be the consequences. If the uncertainty theory truly exists, it would make a great sense to me. If a big spider would eat a little spider, would you become engaged in to a vendetta-like retribution for the little spider? Would you punish him? Or let the events take their course. Maybe it would simply be known to you, that you might hurt the gentle balance in a place where millions of creatures rightfully call their home.

No such thing as boring

solaris

Never had issues with slow-paced films. Moreover I believe that there is no such thing as boring, – slow-paced yes, but not all dislike slow films, only those who are used to flicks, films that are made to entertain, whatever the story or genre is, I call them anything but films. Can’t say that films  similar to Spider but fast-paced or with enough action going on screen would belittle Spider in any way, and vice versa, – there are far more slow-paced films than Spider, but not any less good because of that. Again, if the issue is the pace, then who told us that films should attract us with what is happening on the screen at the moment, rather than with its atmosphere build-up throughout the whole film. If it’s not your cup-o-tea, then fine, but that’s it. By expressing your boredom with anything, you simply show your impatience with it, brought by the inability to connect with the artist, which can happen for many reasons.

Ending is important

I was kind of satisfied with it, as it was not one of those typical Hollywood endings which we are regularly fed with. It was as the polarity was turned upside down in a hope that it will make all the difference, which raises my concern here. Now most of us want the villain to succeed, only because we know that he won’t succeed, and in the end we feel a bit tricked yet content. So my concern is that the ending was nothing more than the same old trick being rehashed – we feel content for the likable protagonist, but kind of dissatisfied about the actual ending. If only the ending would have been more sophisticated, more ambitious, – it would have been more satisfying. I will stop my rant now.
I agree with Mort, the ending is a very important part of the story, nay, – most important. It is that small lapse of time that we experience at the end of the film, it is that thing that makes the film worth sitting through, to find out how it is possible for this hysteria to unwrap.

There is no bug

I’ve seen the movie twice now, and I’m positive that there were no bugs.
It was quite easy for me to come to this conclusion, it was probably some of the peters lines, like when he says that, “people can do things to you, things you don’t even know about, they try to control you, they try to force you to act a certain way, they can drive you crazy too”. He was probably thinking about those government men he was running from. But think how everyone tried to control this fragile woman. Her crook of a husband and then the demented Peter, whose “bug” has won over her, and turned her completely bonkers .

A battle of wills. Desperation and fear of staying alone, and to what it can lead you to. I believe this movie is a bout that, and of course damage the drugs can deal to your nerve system, and maybe about a lot of other things, a moral even. Matters not with such great performances.
